From September 2 to 7, our windmills are in the spotlights on every single night. Come and dream away in a Dutch fairy-tale landscape as you gaze out over the waters reflecting the shimmering image of our illuminated windmills. We have extended opening hours to last well into the evening, so come by and relish the special mood as Kinderdijk World Heritage is lit up!
2019 Illumination Week
During Illumination Week, our windmills light up like shining beacons against the dark evening skies, as we literally cast the spotlight on each of our nineteen mills. An unparalleled opportunity for photographers out for some wholly unique shots, to be sure. Still, all other visitors will also find it doubly worthwhile to come and sample the magical atmosphere of a spectacle you won’t find anywhere else in the world. Below you will find a summary of the special activities planned for our 2019 Illumination Week.
If you really want to get up close and personal with illuminated windmills, buying a ticket for one of our tour boats is the way to go. You can get your tickets online ahead of your visit, or you can purchase them at the ticket office on the evening of your arrival. To suit this special occasion, our skippers keep on sailing all through the evening, so sit back and enjoy the trip as the boat carries you past windmill after gorgeously lit windmill on a magical Illumination Week tour. Once you’re back on dry land, you are most welcome for a drink and a bite at the Molenhoek outdoor terrace.Buy tickets
The village of Kinderdijk will be hosting its traditional Windmill Fair on Friday. This is great opportunity to get acquainted with the locals and with the products that characterise the Alblasserwaard region. The scene will be decorated with lovely illuminated miniature windmills, marking the fair as a recurring annual highlight for visitors and residents alike. Here, you’ll get to sink your teeth into craft products and local delights in a wonderful atmosphere, while you take in the intriguing display of luminescent windmills lined up against the backdrop of the World Heritage. On top of all this, you will be treating the community too, since the revenues are traditionally donated to the volunteers governing the local Kinderdijk playground.
Illumination Week sheds new light on our windmills in a very real sense
